People ask me how a legal English trainer ended up loving the stock market. The truth is, I never left my first profession. I just found a second one that rewards the exact same skill.
For thirty years, I have trained lawyers across more than fifty countries to read contracts the way a surgeon reads an X-ray. Every word matters. A misplaced modifier can cost a client millions. A vague verb can sink a deal. You learn to slow down, to look twice, to never assume you understood something on the first pass.
That is trading. That is exactly trading.
The market speaks in its own language, and most people skim it. They glance at a headline, they chase a ticker, they react. But a trained reader — someone who has spent decades parsing dense, deliberate prose — sees what others miss. The footnote. The qualifier. The word the company chose instead of the word it avoided.
Language is never neutral. Not in a contract, and not in an earnings call.
And then there is the other lesson, the one no textbook teaches: patience. Berkshire Hathaway did not become Berkshire Hathaway by chasing. It became Berkshire Hathaway by waiting — by reading, understanding, and holding. Greg Abel is carrying that forward now, and doing it well. The discipline is the same one I have preached to lawyers for decades: do the reading, trust your analysis, and let time do the heavy lifting.
People think trading is about speed. The best investors I know — the ones I have sat beside at annual meetings, the ones whose letters I have studied like case law — will tell you it is about the opposite. It is about sitting still when everyone else is running. It is about knowing the difference between noise and signal, the same way a good lawyer knows the difference between dicta and holding.
So no, I did not abandon my first career for a second one. I brought thirty years of close reading to a market that punishes everyone who skims. The words were always the edge. They still are.
