This week, Mexico flies its flag over a country in full color. Green for hope, white for unity, red for the heroes remembered with pride — and at the center, an eagle on a cactus, an image older than the nation itself. Beneath those three colors, Mexico is preparing for Día de Muertos.
The festivities are unlike anything else on earth. Marigolds are laid in bright paths to guide the way. Candles glow in windows, photographs are placed on altars, pan de muerto is set on tables, and music plays in cemeteries after dark. Families do not hide their grief. They set a place for it.
The altar itself is called an ofrenda — an offering. In English, “offering” is also a word of documents and business, precise and priced. One word, two worlds: at the altar it means love remembered; on paper it means value presented. Knowing which world a word is standing in is the whole art of reading well.
