An earnings call is not a numbers call. Numbers are in the release. The call is words.
A CEO says “challenging,” and traders hear caution. A CEO says “headwinds,” and traders hear trouble ahead. A CEO says “cautiously optimistic,” and traders hear hope, carefully worded.
One big company beats, everyone gets excited for the other companies. One big company disappoints, the whole market tanks — CoreWeave, last Thursday, in my reading. Confidence builds confidence, fear builds fear, and both start in words, not numbers.
That is how the market and words intertwine: contracts, earnings calls, Fed-speak, AI output — one discipline of precision reading. Read the words exactly, not hopefully, not fearfully, and you read the market exactly.
